Gotye Feat. Kimbra – “Somebody That I Used To Know” – 12.23.11
“No you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know”
I first heard this song accompanied by the music video and diving into it without knowing anything in general about the artist skewed my first impression I will say that. On first glance, I was slightly disheveled by the camera panning across a naked male body distracting me from the first verse and didn’t really begin paying attention until the chorus hit.
But after a second, third, and fourth listen I found Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” emotional and an all-out aural wonder from beginning to end. It’s a classic breakup story featuring DHM Top 10 cutie, Kimbra adds the woman’s perspective to the heartbreak, strongly reminding me of Bedouin Soundclash’s “Brutal Hearts” featuring Couer De Pirate, which I see making song of the day in the near future.
